Details

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how vulnerable we are as a global community to infectious disease. The known unknown is Disease X, and it will most likely be a disease that emerges or re-emerges from pathogens originating in animals. With our global living patterns, detection by the time a human disease outbreak occurs may be too late. Early warning One Health focused surveillance systems will be crucial to preventing or mitigating the next pandemic. Such systems require early recognition of a disease syndrome; detection in environments or animal populations; diagnostic innovations; and the rapid identification and characterisation of causative agents. This panel will explore how we better connect our systems of knowledge – human, animal and environment – to reduce risk. We need to know what infrastructure and data sharing capabilities are needed; how can we limit disease transmission from sources of origin; and what novel partnerships across sectors are essential to be better prepared for the next pandemic.
